Courtroom nerves are natural, but with the right preparation, criminal defendants can approach the process with confidence. Understanding the steps of the case, knowing what to wear, and how to behave in front of the judge are just a few pieces of the puzzle. Being thoroughly prepared not only eases anxiety but also ensures defendants can handle whatever happens during the proceedings.
We recently spoke with attorney and partner Matt Wilkov from Rubin, Glickman, Steinberg & Gifford, P.C. A seasoned lawyer with the firm since 1999, Attorney Wilkov shared his approach to preparing clients for court. He emphasizes that preparation goes beyond simply understanding the legal process—it involves coaching clients on how to present themselves, manage emotions, and handle interactions with the court. Rubin, Glickman, Steinberg & Gifford, P.C. is dedicated to ensuring each client is fully supported and ready to face their day in court with confidence.
How Our Skilled Attorneys Prepare Clients for Court
At Rubin, Glickman, Steinberg & Gifford, P.C., preparation is essential to every case. Attorney Wilkov emphasizes the importance of the initial consultation, where everything begins. “The interview process is key because we make sure the client understands all the steps in the process and what to expect along the way.” This sets the foundation, helping clients feel informed and confident as they move forward in their case.
As the case progresses, Attorney Wilkov and the team work closely with clients to develop a strategy and manage each phase carefully. “We start by confirming fault, making sure the driver who hit our client is clearly responsible. Then we ensure there is insurance backing for the driver or for our client.” Wilkov explains that once the liability and insurance issues are handled, the next focus is on medical evidence and documentation. He adds, “We rehearse with clients, going over every detail so they know exactly what matters and what to expect.”
By guiding clients through the case and carefully managing expectations, Rubin, Glickman, Steinberg & Gifford, P.C. ensures that every client is fully prepared and supported for their day in court.
3 Tips for Criminal Defendants Appearing in Court
When preparing for court, a criminal defendant’s appearance, behavior, and testimony play an important role in shaping the outcome of their case. Attorney Wilkov shared practical advice on how to make the best impression in court, offering tips on how to present yourself with confidence and respect.
1. Appearance: Dressing the Part
How a defendant presents themselves in court can influence the judge’s perception. Attorney Wilkov emphasizes the importance of looking polished and respectful, especially when facing a judge who is evaluating every detail. “When you are going to court on the day that you’re going to be sitting in front of a judge who’s judging you, appearance is really important,” he says. While certain hearings may not require a formal look, for more serious court appearances, it’s crucial to dress appropriately. This means wearing professional clothing, covering visible tattoos, and removing distracting piercings. “You want to look like someone who could never have committed a crime,” Wilkov advises.
2. Behavior: Keeping Composed in Court
Defendants must also be mindful of how they behave in the courtroom. Non-verbal communication, like making faces or shaking your head, can leave a negative impression. “Judges don’t like the defendant to be, you know, communicating with them by their mannerisms or by non-verbal communications. If they’re making faces and shaking their heads, making it clear they disagree with something, that will be held against them,” says Wilkov. The key is to remain stoic and focused, even in uncomfortable situations. “You need to look interested and concerned, and you need to stay quiet,” he adds. This helps ensure that no misinterpretation of behavior negatively affects the case.
3. Testimony: Be Prepared to Speak Clearly
Testifying in court can be intimidating, but with proper preparation, a defendant can present their case confidently. Wilkov highlights the importance of practicing before stepping onto the stand. “We rehearse with them and practice with them and make sure they know what matters,” he explains. If a defendant is called to testify, it’s essential that they understand the process and how to answer questions clearly and calmly. For those facing cross-examination, Wilkov recommends preparing for tough questions. “We actually prepare cross-examinations so they know what to expect from the district attorney,” he adds. Thorough preparation helps defendants handle the pressure of testifying and ensures they can communicate effectively during their trial.
